Telling the Recycling Story!

 

LFCAA Recycling & Litter Prevention offers free educational programs & tours about recycling & sustainability for organizations, schools and businesses. Participants will learn fun information about caring for our environment during an interactive presentation. Programs can be held in person or virtually during traditional work hours, lunch breaks, or after hours at your place of work or at the Recycling Center! 

Presentations are adjusted to suit your organization’s needs. Presentations are typically 15 to 45 minutes long. All presentations held at the Recycling Center will receive a tour. To schedule a free presentation, tour or workshop, email kmurphy@faircaa.org or call (740) 205-8027.

Presentations / Educational Programs


Recycling: It doesn’t have to be confusing!

A presentation that breaks down environmental and recycling concepts. The presentation is perfect for individuals trying to live sustainably. We will address why certain materials can or cannot be recycled, what happens to recyclables after they are collected and more!

Hands-On Activity: Recycled Evaluation Bag - Participants will organize items commonly thrown away or recycled. This fun & challenging game is a great way to show why recycling & sustainability can be confusing. 


Earth’s Natural Resources

This presentation is designed to educate participants on Earth’s limited resources. Activities and presentations will discuss the consequences of producing a lot of trash, and the difference between a want and a need. After the presentation, participants will brainstorm ways they can reuse trash to prevent it from entering the landfill. 

Hands-On Activity: Waste-Free Lunch - Each group will receive a lunch box filled with typical foods. Groups will rate & identify items on how sustainable they are. 


Our Changing Planet

Participants will learn about the effects of environmental change (man-made or natural) on organisms in an ecosystem. Students will learn about the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and will discuss problems and solutions to this ever-growing trash patch. 

Hands-On Activity: Keeping the Sea, Waste-Free  - Participants will be challenged to engineer a type of system to fish all the trash out of the sea. Speed bumps will occur throughout their journey demonstrating the challenges researchers face.


Composting

Composting is Earth’s natural way of recycling organic waste. There are multiple ways you can compost and we will be discussing tips and tricks on how you can get started or improve composting in your home! 
Hands-On Activity: Bottle Composting


Pumpkin Jack

(Designed for Elementary Aged Students):  Pumpkin Jack is a story about a young boy who loved his jack-o-lantern. It was after Halloween and the jack-o-lantern began to rot, so they had to place the pumpkin into the compost pile. The story is a great way to educate kids on composting and why it’s important. After the story, we will discuss landfills and other ways we can divert waste!

Reducing Food Waste Workshop

From travel to packaging, food creates a lot of emissions. This presentation will explore different ways foods create emissions, food packaging and disposal! Organizational tips to prevent food waste and a composting demonstration will be shown throughout the workshop. 


Third Grade Billboard Contest

The Third Grade Billboard Contest is an art & education competition held during February and March of each year. All third grade students in Fairfield County are invited to participate. Each student is asked to design his/her own billboard following a specific theme. Students' artwork is then reviewed by a panel of judges, which will select the County’s top twelve. The artwork winning first place will be enlarged to a commercial-sized billboard and displayed in downtown Lancaster! Each school district in Fairfield County is invited to participate!
